What every bodyworker needs to understand about Secondary Trauma Stress and Compassion Fatigue: New! (3 CE)

The massage industry has already been proven to provide benefits as an adjunct to psychotherapy when working with mental health. As massage therapists, we are also considered a viable tool with pain management. Secondary traumatic stress, also known as compassion fatigue, is found within care-giving professions, including massage therapy. Working with our client's pain, whether that be mental or physical, can directly impact us in a negative way. Commonly described as, when helping hurts, it is important for the massage therapist to have an awareness of signs and symptoms before it is too late. After this class, you will have a thorough understanding Secondary Trauma Stress/Compassion Fatigue and be able to identify early signs and symptoms. We will also look at healthy ways to prevent burnout by integrating daily self-care and developing a new sense of resilience when working with those in pain.

Aromatherapy for Mental Health: New! (3 CE)

Our limbic system holds the key to our memories, emotions, and perceptions of the outside world. Through our olfactory system, we have a direct line to influencing this in a positive way via scent. Take an aromatic journey through the world of essential oils and discover which ones support excitatory neurotransmitters (like dopamine) and inhibitory neurotransmitters (like serotonin) naturally so that you can support your brain’s desire to maintain homeostasis. This class also includes recipes and a take home stress relief spray. Learn how you can use essential oils to help decrease your client’s stress level during session—as well as your own.

We will begin with a look at the history of and a discussion over the diagnosis, Autism Spectrum Disorder, as described in the DSM-5. Next, we will look at current statistics, treatments, and the benefits of CAM (Complementary Alternative Medicine) as an adjunct. Last, we will cover the components of sensory integration and how to adapt your massage treatment to a hypo or hypersensitive child.

We will begin with a description of the 5 stages of grief along with what the new science says about bereavement, loss, and grief. Next, we will discuss the concept of emotional release and how we can support grieving clients within our scope of practice. These common occurrences and many others will be discussed and how you can address them by simply adding essential oils to your massage session. Whether you add it to the massage itself, or diffuse it in the air, this 3-hour continuing education class will help you decide on the best oils depending upon your clients' needs. 


Integrating Cranial-Sacral in Pregnancy Massage:  (Available In: 8, 12, 14, & 16 Hours)

Basic information and techniques for integrating cranial-sacral therapy on pregnant clients. Includes information about body changes during pregnancy, benefits and cautions of pregnancy massage, and techniques for common discomforts during pregnancy. Also includes pre-session considerations, setting and supplies for pregnancy massage, and suggestions for documentation. Class is demonstrated and taught in the side-line position. Role-plays of intake and assessment are facilitated.  Class Pre-Requisites:  Essentials of Cranial-Sacral. Your tuition includes the manual.


Cranial Reiki Fusion in a Chair: (Available in: 8, 12, 14, & 16 Hours)

In this technique course we will give a thorough overview involving the application of cranial-sacral and Reiki to a massage chair. A definition of what chair massage is, along with the essentials all massage therapists need to consider, will start off the course. Then, marketing, communication, and ethics will be presented—along with the creation of a business plan draft. Discussion of benefits, contraindications, and the art of chair intake and assessment will follow. Review of cranial bones and chakras—along with proper body mechanics. Last, student's will learn a basic sequence using cranial-sacral and Reiki in a chair. Class Pre-Requisites: Essentials of Cranial-Sacral and Reiki Level I.  


Chair with a Flair: Sitting with the Stones:  (Available in: 8, 12, 14, & 16 Hours)

In this technique course we will give a thorough overview involving the application of therapeutic massage to a chair.  A definition of what chair massage is, along with the essentials all massage therapists need to consider, will start off the course.  Then, marketing, communication, and ethics will be presented—along with the creation of a business plan draft. Review of muscles and a basic sequence will be introduced—along with proper body mechanics.  Last, the application of Water-Less Hot Stones to compliment the student’s basic sequence.

 

Working with Domestic Violence Survivors as a Massage Therapist (4 Hours): 

Domestic Violence affects an average of ten million men and women per year. Did you know that one in four women and one in seven men will be victims of domestic violence in their lifetime? Risk factors may change across cultural and socioeconomic lines, but no segment of the population is immune to domestic violence. This course provides a clinical definition of domestic violence, along with, types of abuse and trauma. We will also look at what warning signs are associated with this special population and the appropriate communication to use with this client. Next, we will look at benefits and contraindications when working with this group and discuss the concept of duty to warn. Last, we will refresh on scope of practice and boundaries so that you may provide therapeutic massage within your professional parameters.  With much gratitude, I am happy to introduce, Amy M. Clark, LCSW, who specializes in working with this special population.  I have had the pleasure in co-developing this advanced level course for the massage and bodywork field.  


Cranial Reiki Fusion (6 Hours):  

This course introduces the fusion of cranial-sacral therapy with Reiki. In this class, you will begin with a conceptual review of both cranial-sacral therapy and Reiki which includes the chakras. Next, a look at the anatomy of cranial-sacral techniques and how it all connects with energy work. Students will cover six fusion techniques that may be integrated during a regular massage session or used on their own. We will wrap up with the benefits of combining these two modalities and how to introduce this new fusion to your current clients. Class Pre-Requisites: Essentials of Cranial-Sacral and Reiki Level I.


Working with Eating Disorders as a Massage Therapist (4 Hours): 

Eating disorders such as anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating are not a choice. They are serious mental illnesses which can have devastating impacts. Eating Disorders affect up to 30 million Americans and 70 million individuals worldwide. Did you know that 1 in 5 women struggle with an eating disorder or disordered eating? Also, middle-aged women are the fastest growing segment of the population being diagnosed with eating disorders. This course provides a clinical definition and diagnostics of this mental illness, along with what warning signs to be aware of. We will also look at benefits and contraindications when working with this special population. Last, we will refresh on scope of practice and boundaries so that you may provide therapeutic massage within your professional parameters.  I am extremely grateful and proud to introduce, Dr. Cynthia Edwards-Hawver Psy.D, specialist in the eating disorders field whom I have had the pleasure in co-developing this advanced level course for the massage and bodywork field.  


Abdominal Massage:  The forgotten treatment zone. (6 hours):  

Way too often I hear from clients that they have never had their abdomen worked on!  As part of our core, this area holds layers of important muscles that affect other regions of our body.  Get reacquainted with the abdominal wall in this technique course and provide a new therapeutic approach to many common complaints.  This technique course covers the muscles and organs of the abdominal cavity.   Benefits, contraindications, and how to introduce to your current clients will be covered.  A full 15 and 30 minute routine will be demonstrated and taught. 


Integration of "Water-less" Hot Stones with Massage Therapy:  NEW! (Available in: 6, 12, 14, & 16 Hours)

Enjoy the no-mess, easy-clean, portable convenience of water-less hot stones with your massage sessions.  Reduce the fatigue and strain in your hands, while providing a comfortable heat source for both you and your client. This technique course introduces the use of water-less hot stones as either a moving or stationary heat source, as well as, a perfect integration to your regular massage routine.  Benefits, contraindications, and how to introduce to your current clients will be covered.  A full 60 minute routine will be demonstrated and taught.   Water-less hot stone kit sold separately.  

 

Reiki Level I (8 Hours):

Provides an overview of Reiki Level I which includes; origin, code of ethics, first level attunement, and hands on practice. We will also cover the cleansing process, aura, chakras, preparation before sessions, and self-Reiki for self-care. Participants will receive a certificate and can practice as a Reiki Level I practitioner.  Tuition includes the publication, "Reiki Level I: Manual" and a special gift.


Reiki Level II (8 Hours):

Provides an overview of Reiki Level II which includes a review of Reiki I and the code of ethics, along with hands on practice. This course will also include the second level attunement, distant healing, infusing inanimate objects with Reiki, and Reiki for your plants and animals. In addition, we will cover the secret symbols of Reiki Level II and how to use them. We will conclude with how to develop your own Reiki practice. Pre-requisite: Completion of Reiki Level I. Participants will receive a certificate and can practice as a Reiki Level II practitioner.  Tuition includes the publication, "Reiki Level II: Manual" and a special gift. Pre-Requisite: Reiki Level I 


Reiki Master/Teacher (8 Hours):

We will begin with a review of the three Reiki symbols you learned in Reiki II. By deciding to take this step, you will start the process of further enhancement of your skills as a healer. You will receive the Reiki Master attunement. You will learn the sacred symbols that come with being a Reiki Master; Usui Master Symbol, The Tibetan Dai Ko Mio, and Fire Serpent. You will also learn how to conduct Reiki I, II, and III attunements and how to set up and conduct a Reiki class. Tuition includes the publication, “Reiki Level: Master/Teacher Manual” and a special gift.  Pre-Requisite:  Reiki Level II


Ethics for Massage Therapists and Body Workers (4 Hours): LIVE  

This overview of ethics will examine principals including professional values, boundaries, communication, power differential, transference/counter transference, and client relationships.  Discussion and role-play scenarios for possible difficult situations that can occur during treatment. 



Ethics for Massage Therapists and Body Workers (3 Hours): Home-Study  

This overview of ethics will examine principals including professional values, boundaries, communication and client relationships. Tuition includes the publication, "Ethical Massage".  Course fulfills NCBTMB mandatory requirements for ethics.   



Transference & Countertransference (Ethics)  (1 Hour): Home-Study

This (1) hour CEU defines the concepts of transference and countertransference and how they can play out in the treatment room. You will also take a look at the therapeutic alliance within the therapist/client relationship and explore how to manage your practice and self-care as preventative measures of these occurrences. 


Applied Research for Massage Therapy (3 Hours): Home-Study

Maybe you are interested in furthering your understanding about an up and rising topic. Maybe one of your current clients has been diagnosed with a new illness. Or perhaps you are thinking about specializing your practice for a certain population. Whatever the case may be, this class is geared to helping massage therapists further their knowledge by using basic research skills. Our field has developed a respected position and reputation due to research. As a massage therapist, it is best to maintain an evidenced-informed practice for your clients, community, and yourself. This course addresses types of research, basic research vocabulary and concepts, learning how to use various data bases quickly, and how to apply your findings to your own private practice. Course fulfills NCBTMB mandatory requirements for research. 


The Essentials of Massage and Pregnancy (Available in: 6, 12, 14, & 16  Hours): 

Not wanting to specialize, but open to the occasional pregnant client? This course provides information for healthy, low-risk clients seeking pregnancy discomfort reduction. Discussion covers physical/emotional changes, benefits, contraindications, interview considerations, bolstering, table positioning, setting suggestions, supply needs and intake/consent forms. Technique portion involves practicing Swedish massage in side-line position and on incline. Tuition includes the publication; The Essentials of Massage and Pregnancy.


Massage & Pregnancy (Available in: 6. 14, & 16 Hours): 

An Introductory technique class that begins with safe client positioning, bolstering and draping for your pregnant client. The course then focuses on massage during pregnancy and gives therapists the basic knowledge and skills to work safely and effectively with healthy pregnant women. Class is demonstrated in a side-line position. Pre-Requisite: The Essentials of Massage and Pregnancy.


Essentials of Cranial-Sacral (Available in: 6, 12, 14, & 16 Hours):

An introductory technique class. Provides an overview of Cranial-Sacral Therapy which includes; the history of, anatomy of the cranium, technique, and presence. We will also explore the location and specific techniques for the following; sacrum, occiput, sphenoid, temporal bones, parietal bones, and frontal bone. Tuition includes the publication; Cranial-Sacral Manual.


Cranial-Sacral Part II (6 hours): 

Pre-Requisite: Essentials of Cranial-Sacral. Class begins with a quick review of cranial anatomy then we jump into 5 new techniques to add to your current repertoire. Tuition includes the publication; Cranial-Sacral Manual II.


The Essentials of Reflexology (6 hours):  

An introductory technique class that can be integrated within a massage session. Provides an overview of reflexology which includes; the history of, anatomy of the feet and hands, and the importance of presence. Students will learn a 30 minute routine for the feet, and explore the location and specific techniques for the following; immune boosting, allergies, headache, neck/shoulders/back pain, and an intestinal flush.  This is not a certification course for Reflexology.  Tuition includes the publication; Reflexology Manual and chart.


Working with PTSD as a Bodyworker (3 hours): Live or Home-Study

This course begins with an outline of the diagnostic description, etiology, signs & symptoms, and treatment most commonly used for clients who have been diagnosed with PTSD. We will explore the use of alternative therapies and examine how stress affects our brain. Last, we will look at massage considerations during treatment and what our role is with the client’s diagnosis.  


Using Massage & Bodywork during Addiction Rehabilitation & Recovery (3 hours): Live or Home-Study

This course begins with the most recent definitions of drugs, addiction, rehabilitation, and the different views and paths to recovery and abstinence. We will also explore modern theories and techniques used and the integration of alternative therapies. We will close by looking at massage considerations during treatment and recovery and what our role is with addiction.  


Massage & Mental Health: The True Mind/Body Approach (3 hours): Live or Home-Study

Are your clients asking you what the benefits of massage are? Learn the latest research about an exploding field, psychoneuroimmunology, and how massage fits in!   The affects of chronic stress and how a regular massage regime can help support our immune system and maintain a healthy psyche will be explored. Wrap up with a self-care activity that gets you motivated and ready for positive change.



Applied Pathology for the Massage Therapist (3 hours): Live or Home-Study

An exploration of the body systems and how massage affects each one separately. Class will address general terminology associated with applied pathology and discuss common diseases that are contraindicated with massage therapy. Finally, a review of most prescribed medication and their side effects that you should be aware of.   


Self-Care for Massage Therapists (3 hours): Live or Home-Study

Self care strategies for massage therapists to maintain well being, support longevity, and manage injury risk in the massage therapy work setting. Includes professional boundaries, hygiene, healthy lifestyle, and body mechanics.
